Literature Text

How long have you been standing
Your nightly vigil by the water
How many times has the light been passed
To the keeping of your daughters?

The river is as wide as dreams
As deep as love and sorrow
At every bend your beacons burn
'Till the coming of tomorrow

Your fires guide the passage
Of the boats that journey on
And the embers when at last you sleep
Turn gray in light of dawn

Sister of the river
Keeper of the light
Sister of the river
Daughter of the night

How few there are who know the way
Or recognize your name
Yet when the winds howl through the night
The river calls your name

I've heard their voices cry out to you
They beg of you a song
They beg of you a lullaby
And peace when night is long

May their time of tribulation
Know the sweetness of that song
And may they find peaceful sleep
The hour before dawn

Sister of the river
Keeper of the light
Sister of the river
Daughter of the night
